When Ash asks her why Kaisa would want her, “a no one,” you kind of have to see her point. Kaisa, however, is talented and strong and interesting. Kaisa is the King’s royal Huntress, and for reasons never explored in the book, Kaisa and Ash are attracted to one another. She doesn’t much care, until she meets someone real that makes her want to live: Kaisa. He eventually falls in love with Ash, and Ash comes to realize that embracing Sidhean means embracing death. Sidhean (pronounced SHEEN) is interesting, or at least has the potential to be, but isn’t developed much as a character.

When she goes on walks, she seeks out her fairy godfather, Sidhean, without really knowing why she does, except that he is her key to escaping the real world. She mourns her dead mother a lot and lives in the fairy tales in her head. She doesn’t complain about her fate or of her treatment. The fairy world is very much alive in this tale, and Aisling (nicknamed Ash) often seeks it out as an alternative to the cruel world in which she lives, now that her parents are dead and her stepfamily is abusive towards her.Īsh isn’t all that interesting as a character. Ash is a retelling of Cinderella, with a considerable increase in focus on the magical elements, and some interesting gender reversals.
